Mike Dabulas, rising star in the Old Glory backs and recent USA Eagle, has been signed for the 2022 season. Affectionately nicknamed “Chicken”, Dabulas was the first of OGDC’s stable of young backs to break out as a star. He played 944 minutes over 11 starts and 13 appearances, missing just a handful of matches due to international obligations.
While he first joined the team in 2020, Dabulas only saw significant time on the field starting in 2021. With Old Glory’s experienced fullback Dylan Taikato-Simpson sitting out the early part of the season, Dabulas took over the role. He performed admirably, looking calm under kicks and with an 80% tackle success rate.
Dabulas moved through several different roles in the back line. When Jason Robertson was injured, Dabulas took over as flyhalf, the position he played in college. Later in the season, when the lineup settled down, he was mostly used on the wing. Overall, he played six times at wing, four times at fullback, and three at flyhalf.
Rumored to be the fastest players on the team, Dabulas’s versatility makes him a huge asset to the team. With the flyhalf position still uncertain after Robertson’s departure, Dabulas could end up seeing usage in several positions once again. Regardless of where he ends up, it will be good to have him back.
