Old Glory’s stalwart loosehead prop Steven Longwell is heading back to Europe to play for the Jersey Reds in the RFU Championship. The Scotsman certainly proved his worth this past season, being one of the most consistent performers on the Old Glory team. With his departure and the temporary contracts of Dever and Sosnene-Feagai, OGDC maybe be looking at a brand-new starting front row next year.
Longwell was the tighthead side of the pair of props that Old Glory brought in to stabilize what had been a disastrous scrum in 2020. He, along with Jamie Dever on the loosehead side, totally turned around the fortunes of the team in the scrum. The experience that the 30-year-old brought from the Scottish Premiership and Italian rugby has made a huge difference.
Having played in every match of 2021 for a total of 967 minutes, OGDC certainly got its money’s worth out of Longwell. If anything, they probably got too much out of him, as an entire season of over 60 minutes a match is a lot for a front rower. With 229 carries, 96 tackles, 7 breakdown steals, and even a couple of line breaks, he certainly made his presence felt on the field.
Replacing Longwell is going to be tough for Old Glory, with the backups be being young player not quite ready for the limelight. I strongly suspect that they team will try to bring in an outside player to fill the role.
