Old Glory has kicked off the signings news for the 2022 season by announcing the return of starting eightman Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz. The 25-year-old has been a stalwart for OGDC through two season, putting in just over 800 minutes in 11 matches with the team. On attack, he has two tries to his name, a just reward for his 114 ball carries and 575 meters gained for the team. On defense he was a workhorse, putting in 102 tackles and 73 ruck arrivals.
However, more important than the stats is the veteran presence he brings to the table. Although not much older than many of the youngsters on the team, Fa’anana-Schultz is a capped Eagle who has played in Samoa and Japan before finding his way to Old Glory. He has had success on the international stage, scoring tries against England and Canada just this year.
This OGDC is losing two of it’s best loose forwards next year, with team captain Mungo Mason leaving and player-coach Callum Gibbins focusing more heavily on coaching. The players stepping in to replace them are eager and talented, but also young and inexperienced. Having the top-level experience of a player like Fa’anana-Schultz will be essential, especially on defense. I fully expect he will reprise his role as the starting number 8.
