Luke Campbell Returns to Old Glory for 2022

Canadian flanker/eightman Luke Campbell will be returning to DC for the 2022 season. A seasoned international with 13 caps for Canada, Campbell had his first season with OGDC cut short by injury.

Going in to last season, I was expecting a lot from Campbell. After all, he has MLR experience with the Toronto Arrows and played in the 2019 World Cup for Canada. I even expected him to start over Callum Gibbins.

Instead, Campbell has made a minimal impact on the pitch. His 196 minutes put him 15th of the 23 forwards on the roster, and his 5 caps put him 17th. It wasn’t clear at the time why he wasn’t playing, but it seems that he suffered a significant injury that kept him off the pitch.

Hopefully, an injury-free 2022 should let us see more of an impact from Campbell. He had solid stats in his limited time last year, including an excellent tackle percentage of over 90%. Defense, and tackling especially, were weak points last year, so a healthy Campbell has the potential to contribute a lot.

While Campbell was used at eight for both Canada and the Toronto, Old Glory has played him exclusively at flanker. With Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz back at eight, it seems likely that Campbell will continue to play flanker. My guess is he will be in the regular starting rotation, alongside Cory Daniel and new signing Dom Bailey.
