Tighthead prop Jack Carroll, a 25-year-old Virginia native who signed with Old Glory last year, has signed on for a second season with the team. Carroll is one of the cadre of former Gonzaga High School players who now plays for OGDC, including fellow props Dante Lopresti and Jack Iscaro. Carroll played football in college before returning to rugby with Old Glory DC.
Having played just 85 minutes in 6 matches in his first season with the team, Carroll remains something of an unknown quantity. As a very successful prop in high school, he has it in him to be great at this level as well. However, he seemed to struggle somewhat in the scrum in his limited appearances last season. As a dual-sport athlete who spent three years in college playing football, it’s not surprising that he didn’t find instant success in one of the toughest positions in rugby.
Another year of development and practice should see Carroll make strides. At 6’2″, 260lbs, he is definitely physically capable of playing the role, and is already bigger than all but the starters on the front row. However, so much of scrummaging is technique, and that seems to be where he could use some help. Hopefully will continue to improve in the professional environment and compete for minutes in the upcoming season.
Carroll likely projects to be the third-string tighthead prop this season once again. With Jake Ilnicki as the apparent starter, it will be between Carroll and Lopresti for the bench spot, assuming Lopresti is returning. Lopresti has proven more on the pitch, so it will be up to Carroll to earn more time on the pitch.
