On Saturday, Rugby ATL managed to scrape by RUNY in the East Conference finals. It was the second-lowest-scoring match in MLR history, with Rugby ATL taking a narrow 10-9 victory over RUNY. Neither team could get much purchase, with both sides committing a large umber of penalties. In the end, however, a late try by Atlanta put them ahead, sealing their spot in the finals. For RUNY, this defeat is their second in a conference playoffs, and to a team they beat twice earlier in the year.
A similar scenario played out in the West Conference finals, with LA taking a close, 17-13 victory over the Utah Warriors. The two teams, know for their sensational attacking lines, held each other in check in a surprisingly defensive match. In the end, a late try by LA put them out ahead by four with minutes on the clock. For Utah, this defeat caps off the the best season in the team’s history, as it was their first season with more wins than loses.
Next, the two victors will meet in the finals for a chance to win the MLR Shield. It is a first time for both teams, as they joined after the last playoffs in 2019. For LA, this will be a golden opportunity to grab a place in history while they still have star coach Darren Coleman. The match will take place on Sunday, August 1, at 4:00 pm, and will be broadcast on CBS.
