The steady stream of re-signings continues this week with Old Glory announcing the return of Jack Iscaro. The 25-year-old loosehead has become a core part of the team in the last couple years, locking in to starting role on the loosehead side and performing admirably.
A local to the area, having played for Gonzaga College High School before heading to Cal Berkeley for university, Iscaro has worked his way to the top of Old Glory. He was a highly rated prospect, spending some time training with the Glasgow Warriors in 2020, the same team that has now taken on three more OGDC players. However, he was injured before that start of the 2020 season and forced to sit out. It didn't stop his progress, though. In 2021, he came off the bench as a replacement for Jamie Dever 12 times, and even started twice for a total of 14 caps. When Dever left last season, Iscaro stepped into the starting lineup fill time. He earned 13 starts in as many appearances, only missing a few matches in the middle of the season due to injury. He played 820 minutes, second most of any front rower, and picked up a try against the Dallas Jackals.
Iscaro was the highlight of the front row last season and should be expected to be so again in 2023. He has provided a strong scrummaging and hard running, with no signs that he's slowed down or stopped improving. If anything, I expect we'll see an even better Iscaro this season compared to last.
The real question will be who the coaches will put behind him. The prop situation has been confused for a while, with no less than four other players getting time at loosehead. Will Vakalahi and Jack Carroll were the most commonly called upon, but both played at tighthead prop in 2021 and were inconsistent on the other side of the scrum. Dante Lopresti got a couple of caps at loosehead as well, as did starting tighthead Kyle Stewart. Next season will also see drafted props Cali Martinez and Alex Balladares join the team. That's a lot of mixing and matching. Iscaro is great and it's wonderful to have him back, but he will need better backup next season.
All in all, great news. Iscaro was a bright spot on the team last year and has a high potential ceiling. It's good that Old Glory was able to keep him in town.
